Rottweilers
are protective dogs towards their family and owners. They have a strong build
and are muscular. They were bred for herding cattle and protecting them. They
are strong and if not properly trained can even cause damage.
History and Origin
The
origin of Rottweilers started with the Roman people who had travelled to
Germany had brought these dogs as guard dogs for their livestock. They were
also used as working dogs to pull carts of farmers and butcher.
This
breed originated from the Roman mastiff named Roman Molossus breed which
belonged to ancient Greek tribe. This dog got its name from a small place in Germany
called Rottweil. The Romans who had settled in this place used to keep their
dogs and go for work and as a result people started using the name of the place
with reference to the dogs and that is how the dogs got their name Rottweiler.
When
the Rottweilers were no longer used for pulling carts, the demand for this breed
deteriorated and this breed was about to go extinct. However sometime later
this breed was used by the police because of their strength and obedience and again
got popular and their demand increased. They
were brilliant in their work and had gained immense popularity due to which they
were even called ‘excellent obedience dogs’.
This
breed had become so popular during the time that AKC had registered more than
100,000 dog breeds.
